the city fire chief says initial findings showed there were no working smoke alarms in the house. the grandfather of the children is in critical condition here at the bayview medical center after he jumped out of the house. candles decorate the home. heavy smoke and flames were shooting from the home when firefighters arrived around 2:00 a.m. thursday. nine family members trapped inside. some jumped out. wilson jeff and from the second floor, but his wife and her grandchildren did not make it out. all dies in the fire. 55-year-old nancy worrell, 1- year-old james holden, 2-year- old kaniyah scott, 4-year- old darryl stewart and 7-year- old tykia marky. >> to lose a child, to lose a mother, it is just heart wrenching. >> there are at least three

other survivors of this fire, including two 19 year-olds. when we believe is the mother of some of the deceased children. another is a two month-old baby who was thrown from the house to save the. two firefighters injured. there expected to be okay. we are live at bayview medical center, george lettis, wbal 11. >> sorry more firefighters still recovering from battling a blaze in southeast baltimore. the city fire broke out in a basement on at the 1400 block of bonsal street are around 3:00 a.m. thursday morning. we are told they are in stable condition. there's no word on what sparked the fire. court's baltimore city police investigating a deadly shooting in the north baltimore. this was the scene where investigators say a man had been shot multiple times after 5:30 yesterday evening, in the 2300 block of north charles street. this morning, no word on a

suspect or possible motive. marylandore male elder residents have developed fungal meningitis. officials believe there could be as many as 14,000 people who may be exposed to the outbreak that has killed 14 people nationwide, including one in maryland. they said they pinpointed at least 90% of them. >> this morning, the vice- presidential candidates will hit the campaign trail after a contentious showdown last night in the kentucky. hallie jackson a recap of the debate. >> we are waking up to instant polls that do not really showing clear consensus as to which candidate cannot looking stronger.

dismembered, making it hard to positively i.d. it. officials say they have been in touch with the family about the discovery. nfl quarterback michael vick had spent time in prison for an illegal dog fighting organization. his family now owns a dog. you wanted his children to develop a healthy relationship with animals. he has work to the humane society to speak about animal cruelty. in the peace prize winner is not a person but a community. the european union was awarded the nobel peace prize this morning for its efforts to promote peace and democracy in europe in the midst of the biggest crisis since its creation in the 1950's. the norwegian prize committee says they received the award for contracting to the advancement of peace, democracy and human rights in europe.

fate today. prosecutors seeking plight and present without parole. both convicted of first-degree murder in september in connection with the death of the 19-year-old. -- 59-year-old anastasia is scheduled to be arraigned today. the alleged abuse was caught on tape. she flew to her native of kenya before she could be arrested on charges. returned last month. >> baltimore city has received a failing marks and how it is school system is being run. an audit found excessive overtime and over payment made to employees. the audit was made, reviewing the books of school districts across the state. >> we look at overtime and found a number of discrepancies were the payments being made cannot be supported by the records.

baltimore's, or a picture of one of baltimore's political families have passed away. clarence mitchell iii passed away yesterday from lung cancer. the 72-year-old was one of the most -- was a member of a the most prominent political families. and was also known as a fierce civil rights advocate. >> we do more. i mourn the loss of my father today. i celebrate the great light that he lived. so great. this historic life that he presented to all of us, who are beneficiaries of the public policy initiatives. and the other ways he impacted us as a family as well. >> our condolences go out to the family. there were some hard times for clarence mitchell iii, deserve a 16 months in prison after being convicted in 1987.
